The new work permit policy, which has not been previously reported, is expected to be included in a forthcoming proposed regulation that would only allow those who applied for asylum at a port of entry to be eligible for a work permit.

The policy will also aim to delay the time those who apply for asylum — either affirmatively while already present in the US or after crossing the border and referred to immigration court — become qualified to apply for a work permit, from 150 days to 365 days.

Currently, those who apply after 150 days for a work permit are qualified to receive it 180 days post-application — a provision that will also be eliminated

Those who are arrested or charged with certain crimes could also be denied access to work permits, which the immigration agency has long provided to asylum-seekers as their cases run through sometimes lengthy court or administrative processes.

Let’s get this straight. The administration wants to prevent asylum seekers from getting work and being self-sufficient? They want to cut off the two feet that they want them to stand on?

And they Can’t use government assistance programs, so in order to seek asylum in the US you must be independently wealthy enough to support yourself w/out working for 2-3 years..... bc most people seeking asylum have lots of $$ and can access their funds easily
-
or they can apply at a port of entry as intended.
-
BS. With trump and Miller's stepped up "metering," the clearly inhumane MPP, and now the fact that those who DID wait to "do it the right way" at ports of entry are now going to be refused asylum with the contested "third country" rule - "intended"?? The intention is INHUMANITY.

Misery heaped on misery. It seems they want to force asylum seekers into illegal work so their claims can be denied.

Excuse me but isn't he just enforcing laws that were made WAY before he was elected!

Our law allows a person to apply for asylum "irrespective of such alien's status," meaning that they can be here illegally and still apply for asylum. The Admin is simply trying to make it more difficult to survive while an application is pending. It's cruelty, really.pic.twitter.com/fmfMBQwNII

And THE LAW doesn’t care if an asylum applicant entered EWI or at a port of entry. See INA 208pic.twitter.com/sdEliNOavR

So they're not letting asylum seekers apply at ports of entry, and if they don't apply at ports of entry they can't work, and if they receive public assistance they can't stay.
