Why ? What problems does taking 100% of my CPU and 80% of my GPU to render a bunch of falling boxes solve? How does it make web development faster?

Obama nails it on ‘call-out’ culture. ‘There’s a sense out there that the way of making change is to be as judgemental as possible about other people... that’s not activism’

A friendly reminder that most people have no clue that means “A then 11 letters then Y, therefore it stands for ” – which ironically makes it more confusing and less accessible. Same deal for – please don’t obfuscate, use instead.

I'm currently working on my first complex (or any, actually) application. My thoughts so far: 1. I love React 2. I love it even more with hooks 3. I hate mutability 4. I'm seriously thinking about learning and moving to while I still can

Last night, Bill Maher went on a rant about comic books & those who love them & the generation (it rhymes with Schmelennials!) that uses words like & doesn’t want to give up the things they loved as kids or grow up Well my name is Miss Valente & I got something to say

I'm developing a pet peeve around slides showing children learning things "one/few-shot", allegedly super magically. A child does not have a few months/years of experience. It has about 500 million years of experience.

A thread: I can only speak to my own experience, but I’ve found that most folks who told me to learn “the fundamentals” meant “learn the thing that I learned first/know.” Usually the abstraction layer below whatever I was doing.

It's an antiquated and elitist viewpoint. There are no "online" and "offline" educations, nor "formal" and "informal". The best people are 90%+ self-educated, whether they have a degree from Stanford or not. The value-add of degrees in CS is increasingly marginal.

some input: I felt very very stupid for a very long time in this industry because of the cottage industry of people getting to look smart by badly explaining something by embellishing it with nonsense rather than simplifying it

There are a lot of ways to find joy in programming, but I think that there are very few of us for whom the joy comes from increasing conversion rates by 0.01% so the investors and founders get slightly closer to buying their sixth car.

“‘The whole culture of focusing exclusively on discrete actions and solutions is a strategy for dealing with feeling powerless,’ says Renee Lertzman, an environmental psychologist and author of Environmental Melancholia. ‘It creates a solutions-based culture that actively works to discourage having other kinds of conversations, and amounts to a…” from “The Overwhelming Hugeness of Climate Change” by Casey Williams.

React should be built in to the freaking browser. You could easily build declarative equivalents for all the browser's APIs. If you did, you could probably dump the whole DOM API in 10 years because nobody would be using it anymore. They would realize there are better ways.

On clarity. Work that is properly presented is often mistaken to be 'trivial', when instead it was simply easy to digest because it was communicated effectively. Poor writing, obfuscation, and needless complexity are not virtues.

IQ tests are funny, because they test the small edge cases of what our brains are extremely bad at, so you get massive variations in "intelligence", based largely on pointless puzzles that evolution never made us good at precisely because they are pointless.

I often go to for inspiration on how to solve some particular UI problem. Quite often, I leave with nothing, because nobody even thought about my use case I guess all those "creatives" can't think of anything more than the same ~5 screens done slightly differently.

The best way to teach someone is to give them the necessary tools, a real project and a deadline. Without a real project, the lessons won’t stick, and without a deadline, they won’t feel the urgency to learn.
