Gnome feels like a deliberate objection to all established UX guidelines, and KDE manages to show me subtle bugs only a few moments after the first boot.

UX guidelines are for people who actually care about users. The FOSS community can be great, and has done great things, but the sooner people realize the Venn diagram of it and people who ascribe to a "FYGM" attitude is uncomfortably close to a circle, the better.

Add Mate to that, I used it and the experience was... painful, bad enough I had to write a document I never posted anywhere about how bad the panel alone is ( https://files.catbox.moe/4chz8u.txt ) and switching back to xfce. My experience is that all DEs suck, especially around the traybar.
