Which, if anyone needs reminding, is a larger % than the Brexit vote to leave actually was in 2016.

There's a frustrating refusal to listen to critical analysis from the region, or to step back and reassess zombie ideas. With exceptions, of course. But so much of the discussion in DC seems utterly disconnected from the reality over here.

Citizens defending a regime, or accusing someone of terrorism can’t always be taken at face value. There are a strong number who have spent years fighting to shed light on the truth, but also working to understand why some choose to ignore it. Nothing is black and white.

And what I’m saying here is - online bots and regime propaganda aside - real fear of the unknown and real fear of further or continuing destruction in this region is real. And palpable. It is about people’s lives, their families, their future. Don’t discount them.

But no one can take the moral high ground when they comment from a plush villa in a compound, or the lush streets of a western/developed capital. I count myself in that. “We” are privileged. We need to recognize it. What scares us all after Jamal, is that none of us are safe.

This region has seen such utter destruction, pain, death and debilitation in its most truest form that no one can understand the real trauma that plagues citizens, unless they have lived it. I am not defending any “unsavoury” positions coming from the region or KSA...

It is neither correct nor fair to box any one person from any one country into a stereotype that fits your argument, whether positively or negatively. And above all, one must - always be aware and understanding of privilege, and in its equal and opposite nature, trauma.

Whilst attention on high profile cases that can spark political crises is warranted and much needed, the global discussion that ensues about countries or regimes many know so little about can dangerously buy into stereotypes of citizens, CSO actors, journalists and the like.

March is pretty significant timing. Most importantly, because it will come 4-6 months (or so) before the “IMF deadline” to restructure EGPC (state Oil/Gas Co), which will itself have massive implications for Egypt’s energy sector, primarily vis-a-vis domestic fuel pricing.
