For those who wonder how I experienced this first-hand: The discussion in question happened during a group therapy session. We were a group of mostly early-20s and a few minors, with our gender therapist. We were all in various stages of medical transition and mostly ftms. /4

At the time, we were all being told to separate ourselves from our families. The belief was that your parents and other family will never truly support your decision or accept you. It was doctrine we believed. It should have been alarming. I don't know why I fell for it. /5

At least one of us should've reported this therapist. She told the minor to leave her home and stay at a friend's until her parents agreed to get her surgery. After the session, the minor did just this for a short time before returning home. The minors mother withdrew /6

the child from therapy for a few weeks and started sending the minor to a new therapist. Evebtually, the minor returned just for the group therapy sessions. The parents were firm and the minor waited until 18 for surgery. /7

I feel a lot of guilt around this. I was a part of the problem, being in that group and encouraging the idealogy. This is part of what drives me to fight for change now. Influential people like therapists need to be very cautious with how they treat minors and what behaviors /8

they encourage. I cannot go back and speak up, but I can speak up now, so I am. Whether you believe my story here or not, youth are being failed by affirmation therapy in a lot of ways and we need to fix it. /end

Youth who are running away are often being encouraged to do so by their peer groups and even their therapists.
