The small wins of academic life: Passing desk reject on the first-time submission of a new paper that you're really excited about. (Tried to explain this to a friend outside academia, without much success.)

5/5 In my view, it's far from obvious how to think about the connection between effect sizes in controlled experiments & the social world outside the experiment. I therefore enjoyed reading both texts, & hope to see more high-powered method-triangulation in the coming years.

4/5 I think these points could have been addressed in a revision, but the paper was rejected and published elsewhere. Main thing: Both the paper & the commentary is now openly available. I suggest reading them both, and then make up your own mind.

3/5 In a critical take (on B's critical take), Daniel Lakens concluded: "a slightly brushed up version might make a relatively trivial but generally educational point for anyone not up to speed on this topic", and listed 3 main points of disagreement:

2/5 Example: If there is a robust effect of social exclusion on behavior Y in laboratory experiments, the effect size can still be both inflated or deflated compared to how that effect occurs naturally outside the lab - and we usually can't know in which direction we are wrong.

1/5 Effect sizes from lab experiments provide information about the strength of a causal relationship in that context, & are crucial in future study design & sample size planning. Baumeister: Yes, but we can't infer how strong or important those effects are in everyday life.

Twitter friends: If you know any good empirical papers on the connection between intrinsic motivation (competence/autonomy/social connection) and psychological well-being (happiness/meaning/life satisfaction), please send them my way -- or share below. Thanks! (Course prep)

Sadly, information about which charities are most effective has little impact on most people's choice of charities. People seem to care more about the warm glow they get donating to a preferred charity than about how much actual good they do for others.

In 2020, you can drop by an open Harvard lecture on Rationality, led by Steven Pinker with a wonderful list of guest speakers -- just by using your laptop or a smartphone from anywhere on the planet.

Prospective outcome bias: People tend to make decisions they expect to feel good about after the outcome has been realized (even when outcome is unrelated to their decision), & pay more to increase their chances of success when success is already likely.

The big question is: Do people get used to being rich? According to this new study, the answer is both yes and no: People end up evaluating their life in a more positive way, but the feeling of happiness may return to baseline rather fast.

Interesting paper from economics just published, finding a strong effect of lottery wealth on life satisfaction 10+ years later, but no significant long-term effect on happiness.

I know twitter rewards tribalism and "hot takes" over the grey zone in the middle (although that is where the truth tends to be), but I must admit this: I like both cats and dogs, equally, and I think they are both lovely creatures. Maybe the middle ground is the true hot take?
