    Western leftists who said Chavez/Maduro should stay in power forever got very quiet when food riots, repression & mass emigration began. Now they're saying the same things about Evo Morales. Fortunately, the Bolivian people aren't listening to them.

    I'm deeply aware that it could go badly wrong. Revolutions, even righteous ones, often do. But for all of that justified caution, Bolivians ousting Morales after he blatantly falsified an election should serve as an inspiration - to Venezuelans, Hungarians, Russians, and more.

    You know it's possible for Evo to have drastically reduced poverty and enfranchised Bolivia's indigenous majority AND ALSO to have disrespected a democratic referendum and attempted fraud in an election. Not everyone's a perfect hero or villain.

    Morales, by his own admission, presided over a fraudulent elxn, after yrs of having pushed the legal envelope on his tenure. He lost his ability to govern thx to both popular mobilization & the collapse of his institutional support. It’s a mess but it’s not a “coup”.

    Kicker is: Western “radicals” making illiberal strongmen avatars for legitimate demands for “social justice” actually undermine, well, social justice. José Mujica was as progressive in his policies as Morales but when his term was done he didn’t try to rig the process.

    If your conception of “social justice” requires dismantling free and fair elxns, that’s not movement building, and it’s not “popular democracy”, in any sense of term. It’s Stalinist cosplay and it’s an Albatross for all legitimate demands and movements for actual social justice.

    Americans telling Bolivians that their largely-peaceful social uprising is just an American-backed military coup is some next level BS.

    The conversations happening amongst actual Bolivians are a lot more nuanced than your fantasies of evil imperialism repressing an indigenous/people-led revolution. Don’t use us for simply social media clout when there actual a lot at stake for el país right now.

    Morales has been in power 13 years. He lost a referendum on a fourth term. He ran regardless and won an election rife with irregularities. He was forced to resign amid mass protests. Even Bolivia's main workers' union asked him to step down. But sure, lest call it a "coup".

    To see who, along with a powerful movement, has brought so much social progress forced from office by the military is appalling. I condemn this coup against the Bolivian people and stand with them for democracy, social justice and independence.
