/ Happy #PrideMonth! This year, @HRC is celebrating 50 years of #Pride, and two momentous anniversaries in #LGBTQ history: the 50th anniversary of the uprising at #Stonewall in 1969 and the first Pride parade a year later. #Stonewall50 #Pride2019pic.twitter.com/uc3FOEmAh0

/ In the earliest hours of June 28, 1969, a group of LGBTQ people reached their tipping point. They were peacefully enjoying the evening at the #Stonewall Inn in New York City when police raided the bar and started hauling out the patrons.

/ No longer willing to take the harassment and discrimination, the LGBTQ individuals at #Stonewall fought back. Their protest lasted six days … and sparked a movement that is still building today. #Pride2019

/ It was a critical moment for our movement, but it certainly wasn’t the only one. Before #Stonewall, we had Compton’s Cafeteria, Cooper Do-Nuts & Black Cat Tavern. LGBTQ people were also fighting back on the sidewalks of New York, Washington, D.C. & across the nation.

/ Together, these events mobilized the LGBTQ community to action. Many of the fiercest fighters were transgender women and queer people of color who fought against this injustice. #Pride #PrideMonth #Pride2019

/ 50 years later, #Pride events are held nationwide in cities large and small, and for some people, it is the only place they feel comfortable being out and proud in their community. #PrideMonth #Pride2019pic.twitter.com/Ey08qqYx9A

/8 As the LGBTQ community celebrates the progress we've made since #Stonewall, it is more important than ever that we recognize the distance we still have to go to achieve full equality, and the power we can harness to achieve that goal, together. #Pridehttps://hrc.org/blog/with-50th-anniversary-of-stonewall-hrc-celebrates-half-a-century-of-pride …
