Is there any medical/health problem associated with having an overbite?

My friend recently told me they 'found out' their daughter needed a brace and I couldn't help thinking 'Well, if the two people who see her most can't see that her teeth are wonky, how wonky can they be?'

Talk with your dentist about whether it's OK to delay the braces.

I tried. She kept pointing out that her top teeth stick out slightly. I asked why that mattered and she said because they're sticking out. I asked if she could have it done any time in her life and she said yes but better to do it now. Why? Because her teeth stick out.

If it can be done any time, then I wouldn't worry about it. Better to wait for when Lucy's ready.

Yes, I think so too. I just don't feel right overruling her own choice about her own body unless there is a really good medical reason.

If you feel the back side of her jaw, you'll notice it goes back further than normal too. Eventually, that can start pinching nerves and causing headaches from what I understand. I have one too and I'm looking at maybe getting the much more invasive surgery someday.

Apparently, it is caused by the fact she sucked her thumb for longer than most kids.
-
Exact same reason for me but finger instead of thumb. That's good though. It means it's not genetic so she doesn't have to worry about passing it on.

If she should ever want to pass as an American...

Mine was also told a brace was needed, but wasn't interested in the slightest. Many years later, I still can't think why it was recommended, if not for some payback for the dentist.

If it's just an overbite and not an issue of straightening/realigning teeth, there may be an option to wear a retainer instead of going for a full set of braces. Much cheaper, much less painful.
