I think it's better to say 'consistently committed to the principle of freedom of speech' which is actually the freedom to hold & express any opinions, no matter how horrible as the default. i.e there isn't a point at which we say 'Not that opinion. The opinion that non-Christians are going to hell has not been banned because of what it is and its potential to offend/hurt/frighten people. It may still exist & be expressed in very many other places.
