And that's where the danger lies. Imagine I got beaten up for saying that God did not exist and how a jury in England and one in Pakistan would evaluate whether that was a reasonable response or not.https://twitter.com/helenfairgrieve/status/998276817483071488 …

that's essentially what juries are for - for ordinary people to decide upon mudder matters like this.

When in rome? If you go to pakistan and start insulting their religion, however correct you might be, then you should expect the results to be different than if you did the same thing in england.

Of course you should expect the results to be different but it can be horribly disturbing. How about this: Let’s say trans person argued for trans rights in Iran. Say this offended beliefs some people identified with. Is it disgusting if they get hit or simply “when in Rome?”

of course I don't think that. As a trans person i would also never even try to go to a country like that. I also don't understand why countries like iran or pakistan are even relevant when, initially, talking about societal norms in britain.

It was America, actually, but much the same. Arguing about the general problem of letting a majority decide who may say what without punishment.

I’m not trying to be an ass. I don’t see how arguing for beliefs about trans rights & beliefs about rights to express personal views regarding religion are different here. It’s relevant because you’re using the same argument but using subjectivity to reach a different conclusion.

I throw my hands up in despair with such incredibly illiberal cultures. I have no idea how to change them and I do not believe that change can even(or should ) be forced on them from outside. I can't debate around them because I have literally no idea what to do

They are infuriating. I have no idea what to do either. It does seem evident that change would have to come from inside. I am somewhat afraid by how much places like the UK are moving toward the authoritarian side of the libertarian-authoritarian spectrum, like those countries.
