sincerely held views on gender that deny trans people's existence *are* personal insults of the worst possible kind - however sincerely held. There just is no possible worse insult to a trans person.Would have to accuse the terf of killing their dead baby to get to similar levels

Yes. Society can frown upon this. However, they must be able to be held and expressed. In the same way, people must be able to criticise or mock the Christ figure or the prophet Muhammad, deny God's existence or deny someone's identity as an intelligent ape for creationism

Someone goes up to a black person and begins using racial slurs at them. They get punched in the face. The punching is not a truly appropriate response and should not necessarily be authorised by law. I also don't care that the person using the slurs got hurt. they deserved it.
