That would be very wrong, obviously. For one thing, it would be very difficult to distinguish 'personal insult' from 'sincerely held different views on gender.' Also, words should not be responded to with violence unless the person is reasonably afraid for their own safety.https://twitter.com/SethAbramson/status/998221803058270213 …

23/ But what if we told those who want to deliberately misgender others as a personal insult that if you do and if you then *get your fucking ass kicked*, the law may not deem that a crime because your deliberate misgendering constituted "fighting words" (i.e. consent to combat)?

sincerely held views on gender that deny trans people's existence *are* personal insults of the worst possible kind - however sincerely held. There just is no possible worse insult to a trans person.Would have to accuse the terf of killing their dead baby to get to similar levels

Yes. Society can frown upon this. However, they must be able to be held and expressed. In the same way, people must be able to criticise or mock the Christ figure or the prophet Muhammad, deny God's existence or deny someone's identity as an intelligent ape for creationism

Someone goes up to a black person and begins using racial slurs at them. They get punched in the face. The punching is not a truly appropriate response and should not necessarily be authorised by law. I also don't care that the person using the slurs got hurt. they deserved it.

Arguing with people who need to be argued with but who won’t listen is the twitter version of self harm. I’m guilty of it myself.

Good grief that Seth Abramsom thread is a picture perfect example of what Nassim Taleb was talking about when he described the "Intellectual Yet Idiot."

I read the whole thing. I’ve now gouged my eyes out. In sum, any thoughts thought before he thought his thoughts are thoughtless.

Encouraging physical violence based on insults sounds like a great idea... how about we bring back dueling to settle such disputes. 🙄
