Yep. There are two competing beliefs about what will end racism. 1) Focusing intensely on race to become alert to how racism operates on many implicit levels. 2) Treating race as irrelevant to normalise evaluating people individually & make casual racism socially unacceptable.https://twitter.com/IonaItalia/status/998068548156166144 …

And you would consider yourself a “universal liberal” no?
-
It was clear from your framing that you are trying to describe it as an impartial observer but are in fact clearly in one camp. I don’t mean that as an insult but you might want to consider that your bias effects how you characterize the other side. ;)

I've long had, and still have, strongly universalist liberal opinions. Over the past few years I've become convinced that I was indeed blind to significantly racist dynamics in USA (where I've always lived.) It's a tough tension to work with.
-
Yes, I see that. It's not a dichotomy in people tho it is in approach. A balance can be found but uncomfortably.
-
The greatest sense of continuity has come with de-centering European perspective. This is imo "merely" Cosmopolitanism for the 21st century, but it's both liberal and culturally radical.
-
Here's a post that I found to be particularly helpful with said de-centering:http://slatestarcodex.com/2016/07/25/how-the-west-was-won/ …

I was a very small child when Dr. King voiced his dream that people not be judged by the color of their skin. It was so simply expressed and radiated such basic fairness, that even though I was very young, I thought to myself, okay, that makes sense, I'll do that.

Excellent. One other element. The links between race and disadvantage are always fuzzy at a more detailed level of analysis (e.g. by ethnic origin) Arbitrary regrouping to make sharp lines for practicable programs end up racist in the universal liberal sense.

They’re irreconcilable beliefs, though. For one to be true, the other cannot be. In fact, for one to be true, the other would cause racism... and would be racist, whether intentional or not.

Should we make this same observation for those who believe the best way to protect women from violence is to store them in a potato sack and not let them outside? Sometimes words and actions directly contradict intentions, however good and genuine they may be.
