Hmph, I thought I had mastered writing in American English because I have the spelling down but APPARENTLY my phrasing still needs editing for Britishness. Also APPARENTLY 'whilst' is not American even if Word's US English spellchecker has no problem with it. Apparently.

Whilst is considered pretentious in America, though definitely a word and grammatical to use.

I fully support your use of 'whilst' and other English-isms. Even here in Midwestern America, we understand the works of Shakespeare and quotes of Churchill. And while you're at it, throw in some British swearing. We're fascinated by it and quick adopters.

Yeah, someone from America tried to pull me on 'whilst' a few weeks back as though I'd made the word up. It's the first time I realized (realised) that it was a Britishism

I use whilst in Canada, partly because it confuses the downstairs neighbours. Canadians mostly use British phrasing and words in an effort to NOT be confused with Americans.

"whilst" and "amongst"... how we ferret out the sneaky Brits. ;) That and seeing who uses the collective as singular and the article before "hospital."

As long as you don't add extra syllables to chemical elements or "U's" to words like "color" you'll pass most tests. "Whilst" will normally just get you called pretentious. Kind of like pluralizing your verbs around "data".
