I had this argument with a Muslim academic arguing for collectivism. He felt that people should be able to set up their own collectives & hold all members to certain rules but said he would leave one which didn't match his values so this just sounded like moral communities.https://twitter.com/Mecanek/status/996377952064540672 …

Historically speaking though, these sorts of moral communities always come with extreme penalties for apostates; there are some pretty obvious contemporary examples (Islam, Amish, Branch Davidians)
-
We all have moral communities.
-
I disagree with that, I think there are many people who's only communities are based on profession, hobby, and other interests of a non-moral nature. Sure, we all operate under some sort of legal system which is inherently a set of morals, but I wouldn't call that a community.
-
Then we're talking about different things. You're seeing it as a much bigger thing than our tendency to seek out people with similar values for our friends and having certain unspoken boundaries.

I think there is a responsibility to make sure these values are based on sound information. Do you have a good reason to kill gays? It's like the police shooting an unarmed person: it can be an honest mistake, or a serious lack of effort to check whether that person's armed 1/2
-
So if allowing homosexuality brings the wrath of God onto your community, that's almost as if gays are armed with heavy weaponry. But if you're going to hold them responsible, have you made enough effort to check that you're right about this information? 2/2

Funny enough, my grandparents grew up in communal colonies in midwestern US. It was religious based, but open to outsiders and free to come or go. Everyone expected to work, communal kitchens etc. most goods made local & worked well until after WW2
-
By then younger people not interested in farm or factory work and wanted more money for consumer goods and fashionable clothes travel etc. So the communal property was than divided and shares given to members. Went straight from socialist to a corporation
-
Is currently one of the largest farms and tourist destinations in the state
