We cannot test the hypothesis that liberal humanism needs a particular intellectual history to emerge although an island experiment could test the hypothesis that societies get more liberal, more secular, more humanist when they are wealthy & core existential needs are met.

@JonHaidt's argument, but I'd posit that it doesn't take into account the lived experience (sorry!) of the precariat through to the new affluent workers. Those groups, in my own experience, are equally vocal re both survival and emancipative values.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
