It's been happening incredibly fast. Every generation has been less racist, sexist & homophobic than the one before. Even within 10 years, you see attitudes change and racist, sexist, homophobic sentiments which were acceptable disappear from movies & polite conversation. https://twitter.com/buyaknife/status/996055041386696704 …

I'm only 43 and speaking for the UK, I have seen the social death of so many casual sexist, racist & homophobic assumptions. I was taught at school that homosexuality was a treatable disorder. That would be unthinkable now. 'Paki shop' & 'stop being a jew' became unacceptable.

It was common to refer to women as 'birds' as equivalent to 'blokes' but 'birds' has died whilst 'bloke' remains. Wasn't seen as neutral. It was common to expect women to make the tea & wash up the cups. It is not now. 'Lady doctor' was a thing. Now it's just 'Doctor.'

How about “bint”? That one sounds disparaging to my ear, but it’s a North American ear.

Bint is so disparaging that it's only ever used ironically.
