We jump so quickly to 'Who are you to impose your values on other cultures?' and that starts with the assumption that we should be culturally relative in our evaluations which is the point of dispute. Not saying that this is your position. But that's where Roxanne comes from. Also, there are those who do the jump "liberal values" = "Western values" = "us Western are superior".

Absolutely. The whole problem is conflating a nationalistic attitude which says 'We're the best because patriotism' with 'Liberal values are better than illiberal ones.' and liberals arguing the latter are going to get accused of the former. That's why I had a section on that.
