It's certainly not a game show but we can say that some countries are doing better than others on human rights and legal equality and social justice. If no system is superior to any other, how can we speak of progress or be progressives?https://twitter.com/BraveEpoch/status/995793015049412608 …

I do know the meaning of the word, thank you very much. I just don’t think you can apply that meaning to a loosely-defined term like “culture” AND start rating them from superior to inferior like it’s some sort of game show.

OTOH, the game show idea isn't half bad.

Honestly I think if someone is unwilling to say cultures can be better or worse then I don’t care how they think our culture should change.

I would say it's a little like the philosophy of individual human rights. We acknowledge some people are better or worse than others in certain ways but we also believe that all persons have intrinsic value and it is not necessary or useful to rank them from best to worst.

“Culture” is just a set of ideas and habits shared by a group of people. Some ideas and habits may be more conducive to peace and prosperity than others.

The idea that some countries/cultures ARE doing better than others is not the same as the idea that this could be effectively measured. The former is undoubtedly true, but doubts about the latter are what make people uncomfortable.

See that makes sense when talking about countries (political/legal systems), even though I don’t think it’s productive to *need* a reference point to speak about progress
