My friend has been having an argument with an academic about problems in the academic/SocJus left. I know there are a few loons but I think you're exaggerating! Will you talk to me about this publicly? No, I don't want to lose my job & get descended on by a Twitter mob. #ffs

So... do you have any suggestions for those dependent on this sort of income?

No. I completely understand why many remain quiet. What is frustrating is that he insists there really isn't a big problem while knowing he could get fired and dog-piled for suggesting there is any problem or talking to someone who thinks there is one.

Got involved in a personal SJ issue recently. Discovered that there is the abstract "yes, bad must be dealt with even after the fact" and gut level pure fury about what was done to me. Now understand the SJW nutjob concept

You could describe the current social & political atmosphere to Kafka and he would reject it as too absurd.

It could be a small number of people who are given dramatically outsized institutional power

It's really entrenched where I am - I see it all over my college's email list. To be fair, I haven't tried publicly challenging it, so I haven't found out to what degree there would be negative consequences for doing so.

this particular full contact sport is for tenured professors only ... also for rich people who don't give a shit. And to paraphrase Spinoza here: The mob is quite terrible when they are not terrified. (there was a time I despised him for this)

The near religious orthodoxy that has taken hold has a powerful immune system which interprets any dissent about any of its facets as an attack on the collective whole. I used to post on a discussion board called Fark, but the Two Minute Hate after Damore's memo was too much
