Generally they just redefine the terms (e.g. C.S. Lewis's definition of a Christian) to make them too broad to carry weight (i.e. like the current use of "liberal"). It's unfortunate but if the idea is to communicate & convince, we've got to not use terms at cross-purposes.

I don't think we are, necessarily. I *know* what you mean. I just think we have to do a lot more work than we normally do regarding making our language both precise and accessible.
