1/I'd characterize the fallacy of No True Scotsman as equivocating between a predictive (contingent) statement about a groups' members and a definitional one. But there is potential tension in that certain groups are "defined" by aspirational ideals honored more in the breach

I get it. I just don't find in practical use that it's of value to say those things. Rather than "it's not liberal to deny free speech" simply "it's [bad for society*] to deny free speech" [*whatever phrase works best for this]. Too many connotations for a word like liberal.
