'I'm listening to this woman because she makes a good argument' is so much more respectful anyway.https://twitter.com/HPluckrose/status/782576626123104256 …

Has anyone else noticed how threads of this nature never actually say anything except "shut up and listen", these people are exceptionally talented in saying very little in a lot of space.
-
Yes. They never explain what the issue is, what should be done, what’s wrong. Because they don’t know. As someone said, it’s often a way to be a victim by proxy. “I’m a woman, you don’t listen to that woman, I’m a victim and outraged.” Then they get feedback and feel proven right

I always understood "listen to women" as more like "stop dismissing or devaluing women's claims on the basis that they are made by women". So more like "stop not listening to women" than "listen to women" as a general injunction.

Maybe they could try listening to women on the net who aren't complaining about their lives incessantly. There's an idea out there that the internet gives a complete version of reality. Contented women who go about their lives with no drama do not, typically, post online.

Well, they don't post a lot of complaints online, is what I really mean.

‘How to listen’ or ‘what to listen for’ is so much more helpful, but nuance has no place in some corners of the internet. It’s depressing how many male wannabe-allies get pushed away in these threads. It doesn’t solve the problem and doesn’t contribute to a solution.
