Im normally with you on these things, Dr. Sommers, but I cant find any references to hardware vs lingerie in elevator contexts except being on the same floor in an Aerosmith song. Unless some Brits can verify this is common (@HPluckrose @greenrd?), it seems like a post-hoc excuse

OYG. One of the oldest jokes around. Not even remotely sexist. Not one tiny bit. This poor guy is catching $#!^ because he's old and made a grandpa joke. FFS.pic.twitter.com/tSe81uLF1g

Dunno why youre saying "FFS" when I asked if anyone could confirm the context. Given that I was unaware of any, the only way to acquire it is to ask. 🙄 You do realize your 1st example implies that the guy said "ladies' lingerie" because he had sex with her on the brain, right?

That wasn't directed at you, but at this asinine situation. Some grandpa repeats a trope of his culture - one that was in Harry Potter, FFS - and receives sanction because some professional victim doesn't get the reference.

The question ultimately is whether we want to embrace the ethos of a panopticon society that makes sentinels of us all, monitoring, reporting, and criminalizing every foible of human verbal interaction that we find offensive, and appealing to authorities to dispense punishment.

Yeah, Ive said elsewhere it could just be a faux pas He didnt do himself any favors by apologizing for the communication breakdown but also telling her her complaint was "frivolous". Some men do still use sexualization to boost their own status at womens expense (eg cat-calling)

And many women are making frivolous complaints right now and this needs to be pointed out. Taking this kind of nonsense seriously is a very bad idea.

🤔 Im dunno if there was a back-and-forth ramping up until he said "frivolous" (eg that she rejected the communication breakdown apology). If she didn't know about the joke's background, then its reasonable to see probable machismo (tho it sounds like she refuses any alternative)

          1) Doesn't matter. Calling her complaint "frivolous" at any point in the exchange was overly generous. "Probable machismo" is not a crime, and even if it were there is no reading of what the man said that is reasonably that. Hyper sensitive harpy heard a gendered word, did

          2) not understand it, and assumed the worst. She is the one who should be apologizing, and the one whose future behaviour is chilled from the exchange. But instead, it will be the rest of humanity that changes, that becomes less human, to avoid conflict with the likes of her.
