There is no point in referring me to laws or consensuses as an argument for the ethical rightness of something. I am not a cultural relativist. I am a progressive working on consistent liberal principles. This means sometimes I will agree with law/consensus & sometimes I won't.

When I reference US laws on free speech, not b/c I think our US laws are central to the argument on VALUE of free expression but rather because I think the place we draw the line is the correct place. (you know me well enough to know I don’t think we’re exemplary in many areas)

For me at least, even the arguments about the latter can be boring. What one finds humorous is highly subjective, which tends to muddy conversations too much.

I know you were just using an example, but it seems as though some who lean toward my political beliefs come to the defense of anyone who says anything as long as what's stated is not in direct contrast with their political stance. It's very boring to see so much hypocrisy.

For example, people get understandably bent out of shape when there's anyone speaking against 2A here in the states, but question anyone's validity to acting upon their 1A to do so.
