I usually like your tweets, so it troubles me to see you criticize European justice using US-only concepts. Not an expert on the UK but Europe’s law on this is pretty different and (try to) balance both concerns.

Huh? I am not talking about what laws are in various countries. I am talking about the liberal principle of freedom of speech.
-
You also said “inciting hatred is too subjective”when European courts seem to manage. And no, you’re talking about the US-only concept of freedom of speech without any consideration of other effects. We European use “freedom of speech” differently, inside and outside law.

No, I'm not. Americans (not all, obviously) have a tendency to conflate the principle of freedom of speech with their 1st Amendment. I say this about it. (First two are from a recent essay. Last two are standalone points made for Twitter)pic.twitter.com/MfomLSMdAt

I thought you were bored with this conversation? You don't really seem to be engaging with what I am saying so I'm going to go and enjoy my bank holiday.pic.twitter.com/g6jElBBClR

I don't want to go over the basic principles under dispute again, no. There is much to read on this if you are new to the debate. Not being condescending. I am currently new to many disputes but not this one so it gets tedious to keep setting out what it is.

Would you move the ‘border’ of free speech closer to mere incitred to violence, Helen?

Defining inciting hatred seems to a subjective and foolhardy effort keeping it to stopping the incitement of violence is much more simple.

FWIW, i measure how speech can limit another's ability to live a normal life. Simply saying men are evil is not hate speech, for example (to me). Telling me I must relinquish some perceived ability beyond my control is, however.
-
And OT, but I love the dichotomy of using "smooshing" within the confines of serious debate.
