This is a misunderstandign of statistics. It says something- though nothing very important- about individuals at the very tail ends of these distributions. Knowing only that they fall within the 99th percentile of human spatial awareness, I could guessa person is male.

Yeah! And I have both spatial awareness and verbal acuity in spades and actual GIS training, and still got mansplained about how to use Google Maps. (When the only reason to do so is traffic anticipation.)

That's true. That said, it's also important which of those traits are more widely used in employment. If spatial is more used/more compensated than verbal, the statement "more competent" could be correct in that sense.
