I must stop saying 'you lunatic.' It doesn't travel and is read as abusive outside the UK. I normally remember this but sometimes I don't. Now, someone is traumatised by my ableism and verbal assault on them.

Lunatic is not really abusive in the U.S. either. It's not a medical term. It's not unlike saying you're bonkers. Kind of silly when people connect it to ableism like "you're bipolar."

i will say as a guy who's a bit on the spectrum (so i'm told anyway) that it doesn't feel particularly good to have people laugh at me and say i'm nuts or call me a freak or a lunatic. it may not be the worst indignity i've suffered, but at the least it's rude & disrespectul.

I’m sorry people do that. People shouldn’t say hurtful things because of part of what makes you you. That’s definitely wrong. But saying “you’re a lunatic” to someone who says the moon is made of green cheese should be fine. And I think it devalues true ableism to say otherwise.

Adding 'you lunatic' to the end of a sentence is an expression meaning 'Don't be silly' here.

In the US it’s “you got to be shitting me” or “wtf are you saying.”

Word policing comes up a lot in my field. Some is healthy, some is not. Personally, I think it comes down to intent and whether or not you're specifically making negative comments about one's disability. In any case, it provides a means for others to derail the conversation.

For example, seeing people just throw around the word Autistic or Aspie to label a way of thinking they disagree with gets very tiresome after awhile. Eventually we just become sensitive to the commonality.

I thought it fit the person you argued with yesterday. Their argument made zero sense and was abusive towards you.

I once dated a Brit who would address my insecurities by calling me "You delicious Loony!" This typically calmed me right down. 😀
