Where this goes bad is when we think that one character flaw defines us and makes us generally bad or worthless people. That is when we are out of the psychologically healthy realm of recognising a weakness and into the psychologically unhealthy realm of obsession & self-loathing

The thing about carrying extra weight is that you can't hide it. It's low-hanging fruit in terms of being able to pick on people for it. People can hide the fact that they abuse their pets or even something like smoke cigarettes.
-
Yes, it is and it is something people notice straight away and make judgements about. There is definitely some good to be done in getting people to be less judgemental about others weight.

There are lots of data supporting that it's *not* a character flaw, or lack of determination. Instead due to hormonal imbalances in the body. Character flaws might be a small part. You'd have to explain those who are effortlessly skinny, versus the very determined overweight.

I don't agree that it's a character flaw (except to the extent that susceptibility to addiction could be a character flaw). I'm reasonably convinced that overweight is a symptom of a damaged energy partitioning system, usually but not always from overexposure to glucose/insulin.
-
Unfortunately nutritional sources of glucose are a) what is most available, b) cheapest, and c) what we're told is healthy... And on top of that, very much addictive (personal experience).

These people will accept bad nutrition, bad diets that will kill them, bad companies that sell them bad foods, as long as they can tell each other its ok they will allow themselves to sink all the way to the bottom. It's their choice, but they will pay the price...
