I'm sorry but if you're going to try to 'shame' me for saying obesity needs addressing as a health problem while I am suffering from numerous obesity-related health problems, you cannot reasonably claim to be either body-positive or supportive of fat people.

I think I am lucky to have the kind of personality that responds to being told I can't do something (weight-loss is seldom maintained in the longterm) or that I mustn't do something (say that obesity is a serious health problem) by getting more determined to do it.

And, of course, I am for the freedom of everyone to make their own decisions. My father decided his life would be better if he drank much more than recommended and smoked even if it would very likely be shorter than if he didn't. The same decision can be made with food.

But I do object to people trying to prevent others from saying that those are realistically the options to be weighed up. And also to people getting angry with fat people for not feeling healthy and attractive as tho we're letting the team down. Fuck off. I am not on your team.

it is possible to simultaneously have compassion and acceptance for people sufferring from weight related health issues and also not lie to them and say their lifestyle is good for long-term health.

Indeed, if I see someone I love slowly killing themselves I'm not going to pretend what they're doing is great. I'm going to love them and try to help them find a better way if I can. I'm not going to be mean to them either though, because that's not helpful.

Exactly. It seems so obvious to me that what you outlined is the correct response; compassion and truth. Yet so many think that if one is honest about weight related health issues then a policy of discrimination and shaming must follow. This is not true and should never be true.

The identity-based activists really don't support the groups they claim to champion. It is all about The Narrative. Any member of those disadvantaged groups who goes off script gets tossed under the bus forthwith.

I am an endocrinologist. Telling people you love or treat to lose weight should and must me done. It is not fat shaming it is caring. Of course it must be with kindness. I am myself overweight, so I understand
