Absolutely determined to be offended. I challenge any reasonable person to read this & conclude that I have a problem with fat people and people with mental illness. https://twitter.com/zoupmachine/status/992893213471072257 …

This is what makes me so angry with this kind of activism. I would be praised & admired for celebrating my obesity & my OCD and positively encouraged to take them both on as identities but if I acknowledge them as problems to be overcome, I'm suddenly fatphobic & ableist.

By working on your problems you are putting pressure on those who have similar ones and aren’t doing anything about them. That’s why they get upset.

'Embracing' is one thing, but the tendency in some parts of social justice social media to desire and acquire disability and poorer health is stupefying and condescending. It's ironically 'peak privilege', IMO.

Indeed. People call you names when they have neither facts nor logic to construct a proper argument against your position. Fat is not an identity, it is a health condition. The only identity one needs to have is “me”.

My mother has struggled with weight most of her adult life. It restricted her dating pool after she divorced my father, leading to her being mostly alone from her late thirties on. Now in her late 70s, her joints are shot, type2, sleep apnea, hypertension etc.

More than just the health problems, it has greatly reduced her quality of life for decades now. By her mid 50s, just going for a short walk caused major discomfort, and by sixty she had to begin using a walker. The sleep apnea and type 2 have reduced her cognitive ability.

People who try to downplay obesity related health issues can take a long walk on a short pier.

Personal responsibility is considered offensive. But what is forgotten is that taking responsibility usually also entails asking for and receiving help from others. It’s an odd thing that we embrace staying sick and suggest that our sickness is a central part of our identity.

I don't think it is coincidence that many activists celebrate problems because overcoming them involves hard work, both physical and mental. It's easier just to have feelings about things.

I don't want, my OCD, to be overweight, to be disabled, to be severely dperessed, or to have anxiety rule my life. I want to leave the house on a whim, walk for more 5 metres without pain, eat what I like, and may other things, that child can go screw herself.

we often become the monsters we fight against. in the battle against the permanently offended class, it's often times we find ourselves becoming permanently offended by those who are permanently offended.
