We need to be clear what is meant when someone says 'incels.' Are we talking abt individuals who get together online & plan & celebrate violence against women? If so, of course, we must regard them as dangerous ideologically-motivated criminals/potential criminals/collaborators

Are we talking about groups of misogynists who post hateful messages about women being evil but do not plan violence? Then we should treat them with the same mixture of pity and contempt as groups of misandrists who do the same thing.

Are we talking about men who have complex political beliefs about societies being gynocentric and women being shallow & only interested in certain men? Treat them with the same open-minded skepticism as those who talk about patriarchy, beauty myths, objectification & fatphobia

Are we talking about all men who are involuntarily celibate? Treat them and women in the same position with sympathy and supportiveness if they seek it, with dignity & minding your own business if they don't.

Ok. I'm with you so far up to this point, specifically. What does it mean for any man to consider themselves involuntarily celibate? The very term itself invokes a self-serving definition.

Well, it means someone who isn't in a sexual relationship but would like to be.

Does this deserve a name? It's a normal state of affairs, not a medical condition. The name suggests entitlement.

Incels are what they call themselves when they form communities. I don't think it's possible to take that away.

Well, some do. Most young men in this position aren't so pretentious. I'd like to think I wouldn't've been. I'll continue to criticise the use of this label.

That is what the movement/community is called. Of course, most men in this position don't join it. It's a specific movement we are talking about. It's horrible. Lots of threats on violence against women who they refer to as 'femoids'. Fantasies about cutting pregnant women in half

I think I'll stick with "so-called incels", cf. "so-called IS".
