My working thesis is that is unprocessed personal pain and anger. It is far easier to place your pain onto a faceless, nameless multitude, than to do the work of facing the complexity of, and people directly involved in, your pain. It is avoidance of personal confrontation.

I don’t think this is intentional avoidance. I think this is how people are learning to deal with personal pain culturally and happens from every point of view. It is a cultural shift that is very different from when I was young.
-
It's strange I was brought up to be different and to ignore what society told me when it came to being me. These days people are raised to demand society tell them what they are allowed to be, and to use cultural / societal pressure to mold people into "allies" for thier causes
-
Look at how upset any group these days gets when "normal" is not applied to them as a label.

Evolutionary Biology: We simplify our world in terms of in-groups and our-groups as a method of protection. Without recognizing this evolutionary tendency, we are doomed to perpetuate it.

this falls under the umbrella of evolutionary psychology as well. its a psychological process that can be interrupted with awareness and intention.

I have the feeling it's some instinct behavior. We try to find easily identifiable patterns that can help us predict consequences and avoid unwanted results.

Yep. It’s possible e.g. for women and men to do life together without getting bunkered into antagonistic interest-blocks bent on competing, rather than cooperating, for zero-sum rights and entitlements. Doing conflict theory on gender is perhaps its most misanthropic application.

Stereotyping is evolutionary necessity. It also makes decision making easier (not saying it's good).

It's not a conscious choice, it's a consequence of being not terribly clever (or really inexperienced)
