We all know this happens but what was said here was: https://twitter.com/LukeOram/status/992156708419129344 … Pointing out that other people call him alt-right doesn't address that at all.

I'm sure you don't think people shouldn't criticise his concept of truth whilst deploring unfair accusations because other people make fair accusations. There must be a way to criticise his epistemology, surely?
-
I don't disagree with that. I just think that people like Peterson will always a have a large audience so long as the rational voices on the left are marginalized. So long as "not far left" equals "alt-right" in the eyes of the media, that will be the case.

I think this thread is representative of the problem: it has become hard to criticise ideas being presented in the public space, without getting drawn into a wider debate around the man. I tried to clearly communicate my contention with those ideas, but that doesn't land.
-
It isn't that I didn't understand your point. In many ways I think
@ContraPoints latest video on him was also accurate. But Peterson is a symptom of a larger problem. I think that problem needs to be addressed before Peterson's more out there claims can be. -
That's very fair and I appreciate it. However we need to consider the whys and wherefores, and the basis of this both claimed and evidenced. It's not a judgement on why some are very attracted or very repelled by Peterson- it's an attempt to understand it at a fundamental level.
-
I wonder, if
@BretWeinstein was a self help philosophy kinda guy and Peterson wasn't, would Bret be the one who was getting grossly misrepresented by Cathy Newman? I think Peterson just capitalized on a needed father figure vibe with the fame of getting attacked by the far left. -
I don't think so, and reiterate my initial statement: the treatment in the media is terrible and unfair. But in saying "just capitalized on a needed father figure" we risk adopting the premise that therefore the core ideology is unimportant; this may be where the disagreement is
-
I think we disagree. Maher said that everything Peterson says seems like common sense. I suspect Bill hasn't seen the Sam Harris interview about truth. I doubt the average person has either. From reviews I've seen, the book that gave him mainstream fame is standard self help.
-
Well, I think it stands to reason that he got criticized by Newman for his contentions with various narratives, and not for espousing self help. Such treatment was wrong in no small part because there was no standard of truth to it. I find that very pertinent here.
