To everyone on the left concerned about men finding @jordanbpeterson appealing - what's *your* answer? Do you have something to say to young men besides labelling them the enemy and pathologizing them? Once you figure this out, a healthy debate will ensue.

I think we can like and respect men as the decent members of society that they generally are and still wish none of them were drawn to strange, socially conservative woo about Jungian archetypes and bible stories. I recently said this to a young man about it.pic.twitter.com/yZZrq73RVu

I totally agree, but we need a more compelling alternative. Very few frameworks on the left see young men as anything but the enemy, or a creature born with the worst kind of original sin known, born sick but commanded to be well, whose nature is a disease to overcome.

Most of the lefties I know do not see men this way at all. But then, we’ve been doing a lot to help them understand moral luck and the social conditioning behind reified gender norms.

There’s no nice way to tell people their slowly waning status is undeserved, their parents taught them wrong and the ideas in their head meat make the world dangerous for women and minorities.

The question was specifically how do we provide an alternative that is more appealing than JBP. JBP is a charlatan that feeds men of slowly waning social status what they want to hear. We have nothing they’ll want to hear.

I think we do. I don't support the dark, ugly, 'original sin' rhetoric going on about masculinity right now and neither do most liberals. We can still value men as highly as women without Jungian archetypes and biblical woo.

Men who object to the demonisation of their sex are not wrong to do so. It is a horrible, hateful, socially-sanctioned form of bigotry. Feminism is a very powerful, cultural force right now and there is little recourse against it when it gets hateful. The left needs to fix this

And the right are all Nazis! This is so productive and will absolutely help us move forward and stabilise society. History shows that 'Everybody with different views to me is evil' has always worked out so well.

That's just wordy tone policing. The feminists are making men have feels. Men are making women be dead or raped or enslaved. These are not equivalent.

Completely the opposite of the truth, as usual. Feminists' concern is 'misogyny'. Men's concern is misandry. Misogyny means that a woman might get upset. Misandry means that men are dead or raped or enslaved. These are not equivalent. Feminism preserves systemic misandry.

The concerns of feminists, in their own words, vs the concerns of MRAs. For comparison yellow=feels, blue=reals. Misogyny means a woman's feelings were hurt. Misandry means men are imprisoned, mutilated, driven to suicide, deprived of their children, or economically enslaved.pic.twitter.com/rJAJMWxsza

Ah, the deep ecology/radfem crowd. Last I read from people like Derek Jensen and Lierre Keith, their "solution" was to hunker down with guns and wait for the collapse, then rise up and kill all the "abusers". Not exactly the kind of people I look to for solutions.

I agree the goal shouldn’t be demonization. I do hope that will go both ways at some point, after watching a lifetime of demonizing of feminists by folks who want to cut us off from the people we want to dialogue with.
