A small fraction of the poly community appears to be serious about the ethical, evolutionary and the game theoretic issues. But there are two flies in the ointment, as I see it. The first is children. The second is the externalized consequence on civilization.https://twitter.com/primalpoly/status/991327597748305920 …

So you're willing to restrict foundational forms of freedom, like mate choice, based on hypothesized, empirically unexamined externalities to civilization?

I'm not sure saying that it won't serve us well and could affect civilisation indicates a wish to restrict freedoms. However, I too think there is insufficient evidence to think this will be the case. There's certainly some dust that needs to settle as we work out these changes.

TBH "fucking around will destroy country/civilization/world/etc" is an incredibly old spook story that right-of-center (and some left-of-center) peeps have been running around with for literally centuries.

Yes, there is certainly a conservative impulse around degeneracy and acting on the sanctity/degradation foundation that plays into this but also some valid concerns about society changing and it is. I'm an optimist tho & think we will ride this out and come to a balance.

I wouldn't rate those concerns as "valid". They are about on the "Hostile Extraterrestrial Intelligence Detection and Countermeasures" level "valid", which is to say, almost entirely hypothetical concerns and fairly old ones at that.

I think it's valid to say we are still adjusting to changes around gender following the invention of birth control, women being able to earn enough to support themselves, divorce becoming easier and monogamy becoming just one option.

The excesses of feminism are 1 consequence of all this and so is conservative backlash. There is still much settling to be done. Blank slatism and its opposite - biological gender determinism are ways people are responding to men & women's different sexual behaviour & preferences

I think this is scope creep, like if we started discussing violence in movies (and, at this point, ridicule-worthy claims that it has perilous and unknown effects) and extended the discussion to cover documented cases of epilepsy induction through visual media

I am looking at it much more broadly than you, yes. The 'fucking around will destroy the world' narrative does indeed tie into a much older conservative narrative and is rooted in nothing. My 'but also valid concerns' should be taken to indicate concerns outside this.

Much more reasonable ones where we're working out things we haven't had to work out before because we've not been in this situation before and a lot of it does come down to sex because so much always does re: gender issues in a sexually reproducing species.
