I'd be very wary of expanding the word 'violence' in this way. When threats of violence are the cause of someone wearing a hijab, it is the threat of violence which is the problem. Very often the reason a western woman is wearing a hijab is because she holds socially conservative views about 'modesty' in accordance with conservative interps of her religion. We can critique socially conservative views but women are still allowed to be socially conservative

I was going to expand my thing about denial of homophobia to this. There is a matching reluctance among some Muslim women and non-Muslim supporters who defend the hijab and the notion of gender-specific modesty to acknowledge that this is a socially conservative view of gender.

So we see hijabs featured in posters on marches by the same people who bitterly object to 'slut-shaming' when done in a western context and oppose unequal expectations of male & female 'modesty' & 'chastity' in that same context.
