I'd be very wary of expanding the word 'violence' in this way. When threats of violence are the cause of someone wearing a hijab, it is the threat of violence which is the problem. I was going to expand my thing about denial of homophobia to this. There is a matching reluctance among some Muslim women and non-Muslim supporters who defend the hijab and the notion of gender-specific modesty to acknowledge that this is a socially conservative view of gender.

So we see hijabs featured in posters on marches by the same people who bitterly object to 'slut-shaming' when done in a western context and oppose unequal expectations of male & female 'modesty' & 'chastity' in that same context.
