Yep. We must focus on ideologically-motivated epistemology & not get distracted by tribes and labels or even by aims. That last one needs explaining but it underlies so much of the current problem with existential polarisation.https://twitter.com/christianjbdev/status/991249097867907072 …

Not to get all Jordan Peterson, but boy, that NYT Marx piece is embarrassing. “enlightened or rational thinking is not enough, since the norms of thinking are already skewed by the structures of male privilege and social hierarchy..” Ugh.

Too many reasonable leftists and reasonable rightists are ignoring/minimising/condoning/internalising seriously worrying ideologically-motivated epistemologies on their own side because aims match up on the surface.

They give too little thought to methods and understandings of the world because the core aims seem OK and you've got to pick a side and the methods and understandings of the world on the other side are crazy and dangerous.

But how we see society and the methods we advocate for improving it are the things that really matter. I am a liberal lefty. I share progressive aims in terms of gender/racial/LGBT equality with intersectional lefties. I do not share their vision of society or their methods.

I think they are based on dubious ideological premises, low on respect for evidence and reason and counterproductive to the interests of women and racial and sexual minorities.

I used to try to convince them we were on the same side and should discuss the merits of our different approaches. eg:pic.twitter.com/nqNZQbNhxk

But ultimately we are not on the same side because methods and epistemology and perceptions of society (which are all bound up together) matter hugely. Thus:https://areomagazine.com/2017/08/22/a-manifesto-against-the-enemies-of-modernity/ …
