In other words, absent an Archimedean point (Reason to us, which is just another metanarrative to them) there is no way to evaluate competing metanarratives since they are intrinsically oppressive / bound up with power?

There aren't objectively right and wrong answers, just competing narratives or 'language games' and they are set by dominant discourses, yes. The piece I just wrote about this becomes available to all in a couple of days.

Perhaps conservatism is compared to the wrong things: conservatism - preference for status quo directionalist (ht:
@mungowitz) - preference for movement in particular direction utopian - preference for a particular end state -
Chesterton: “If you leave a thing alone you leave it to a torrent of change. If you leave a white post alone it will soon be a black post. If you particularly want it to be white you must be always painting it again; that is, you must be always having a revolution.”

Yeh, conservatism might be inherently flawed for that reason. There’s always some direction to go in, but take the valuable part of conservatism which is to appreciate what is already good. vs Utopianism: Q: How do you get to Dublin? A: I wouldn’t start from here.

This is an interesting point. Technically quite a few American constitutionalists are liberals. Especially if they're keen on the more liberal aspects (e.g first amendment). But if you told them that, they'd freak out.

American Conservatives are trying to preserve the liberal order of the Constitution. That is why people call us Conservative.
