Some points b4 I finally go on my long walk & leave Twitter for the day: When saying, 'I think the point is....', pls ensure that you are actually clarifying the point that was made & not making an entirely different & much more reasonable one to defend the maker of a bad point

Pls try not to think tribally. If I defend atheists against one unfair criticism which misunderstands what atheism is, this does not mean I am of Tribe Atheist and will defend all manifestations of atheist movements or attitudes or approaches to criticism of religion.

Therefore, 'Yes, but atheists can be unreasonable and aggressive and do bad things' does not in any way add to a conversation of whether an atheist is someone who denies the evolution of the brain to include religiosity. Yes, they can be. No, that is not what an atheist is.

Also, the topic was raised that atheists who promote scepticism are inconsistent if they criticise religious people who evangelise. Yes, if they actually hold the view that it is wrong to try to persuade other people of your worldview, that would be inconsistent. BUT...

'Atheist' is not defined as 'someone who believes that people should not argue their case.' Most of us, I suspect, believe in the value of argument, debate and the marketplace of ideas. We might well criticise the case being for religion but not the making of cases.

This, of course, only holds true if the atheist is a defender of free expression as an individual freedom & as a way to advance knowledge. Some atheists are authoritarian far-lefties who don't support this and some, even more sadly, are authoritarian far-righties who don't either

On this topic, atheists who defend freedom of expression and advocate for the value of a marketplace of ideas are much more likely to make common cause with religious people who do so than with atheists who do not.
