Fuck's sake! I have been so relaxed & positive & productive while not on Twitter. Drawn back for an hour due to a friend being misrepresented & now I'm stressed & furious & inclined to think the vast majority of humans dishonest, stupid & unreasonable again & despair of us.

I am going away again until at least the weekend & I am going to come up with a new strategy to make Twitter a place where I can talk to my valued tweeps & have reasonable and productive conversations again w/out being deluged by people who can't or won't think & driven to rage.

It will prob involve having 'all notifications' on for only a limited time in the morning so I can skim through people I don't follow & pick out the reasonable people engaging in good faith whether agreeing or disagreeing and keeping settings on 'only people I follow' rest of day

It will certainly involve muting a hell of a lot of people as soon as they give unambiguous indications of being abusive, unreasonable or dishonest. I will also have to give myself permission to just ignore tweets for any reason including that they don't interest me right then.

I was fine until I got up to 10,000 followers and then it just got too much to manage especially as I tweet a lot and about things people have strong opinions about, but I kept trying to read all my notifications & respond to any which seemed sincere. That's not working.

I've always loved Twitter and all the connections I have on here but now, so much nit-picking & niggly objections & deliberate misunderstanding & people insisting I must respond to them on topics I got tired of discussing years ago, I'm in a constant state of stress.

Which is silly as Twitter is something I choose to do because I get a lot out of being connected to so many thoughtful and interesting people with a variety of political & ideological views & all kinds of different expertise and knowledge. I don't have to lose that.

I just need to rethink my relationship with Twitter and make a new one on my own terms. I'm sorry, people who think you should never mute or block and should be open to all comers and answer every tweet that seems polite & sincere. I used to think the last two but too much now.

I will work out a strategy so I can use Twitter the way I want to use it and not feel guilty about that. I will still be open to people I don't know making interesting & thoughtful comments but not 24/7 or I just get taken over by it and never get anything done & don't sleep.

I know it seems silly to get stressed out by Twitter. Very first world problems. But it's not Twitter itself. It's me and feeling like I have a responsibility to engage with everything & being far too baitable that makes Twitter stressful. I must learn to be selective & to ignore

Please Helen, find a sustainable way to keep making good arguments here. Maybe take up on meditation or stoicism? Focus on those whose opinion you can influence and not the zealots? I've enjoyed reading your arguments so far and I hope I can keep doing that.
