I studied in Italy where there is a whole lot of ridiculous pompouseness but here in the UK I often get shocked at how students address lecturers, sometimes starting an email with just "hi". I would like that they wait for my permission for calling me by first name.

This is exactly why I am happy to give permission to call me by first name. Otherwise it would be my duty to also address my students as "Mr" and "Ms".
