I studied in Italy where there is a whole lot of ridiculous pompouseness but here in the UK I often get shocked at how students address lecturers, sometimes starting an email with just "hi". I would like that they wait for my permission for calling me by first name.

Yes, I do not object to formality and courtesy. I simply object to a failure to be reciprocal about this.

This is exactly why I am happy to give permission to call me by first name. Otherwise it would be my duty to also address my students as "Mr" and "Ms".

As a Christian, this is relatively easy to understand in light of the doctrine of Original Sin. Which makes me wonder if this doctrine could pass muster in the context of evolutionary psychology. (Really.)
