More thoughts on tribalism. Sometimes I am asked if I completely toe the line of sets of ideas like atheist, skepticism, liberalism and it is implied that if I do, I am a narrow-minded tribalist. This doesn't work and I will tell you why.

I completely think that evidence should be required to believe in something but I am not a skeptical tribalist because I don't believe holding this view makes someone one of my tribe. I certainly don't support everyone who identifies as a 'skeptic.'

I completely think that liberalism - the aim for equal opportunities, freedoms and rights - is the best model of society but people who share this position are so ideologically and intellectually diverse otherwise, I don't think this can count as a tribe.

Lets separate commitment to certain principles and epistemologies from tribalism. It should not be suspicious if someone has consistent principles and values but be wary of people who only find common ground with others who share them & think in terms of in-groups & out-groups.

I think you are confused - you don’t get to choose to be part of a ‘tribe’, it is something humans evolved to do, and it is extremely hard to avoid. The fissures of tribalism develop according to who you can and cannot have the most mutually beneficial future interactions with.

In the lab tribalism can be induced by literally getting people to wear the same colour shirts. So sharing with a minority a deeply held conviction that is totally at odds with the majority is, I would say, going to illicit tribal thoughts from you whether you like it or not.

Yes, you're speaking in a completely different context.

I did. It’s an overly optimistic self-assessment with the context.
