I did say "for want of a better term" :-) If you want to say that "social conservatism" is oppressing women instead, works for me fine. Point still applies - resistance to that (brutal and unpleasant) tendency needs a name, and a place to stand.

Well, at the moment, it isn't in most places tho Ireland needs its laws sorted out and the US is trying to make access to abortion difficult.

"most places" in the western world, you mean?

Yes, that is what I mean.

So you'd agree that there is still a pretty major role for an overt feminism in the rest of world? And that if you're any kind of internationalist, then you'd probably want to hang onto your feminist label for this at least......?
-
Yes. No.

How does that work, though? If you go on a trip to Pakistan or Nicaragua do you become a feminist on the plane, and then change back on the return? I can't see how that works as a moral stance (or a pragmatic one to be honest).

Hi there, I’m not a feminist but believe in genger equality so do argue considerable more for women’s rights in Pakistan (equal access to public space, speaking up for the necessity of education, divorce & inheritance laws etc.) yet often disagree with feminists.
