I'm just thinking this through coz on the one hand, I hate the 'Go educate yourself' thing but, on the other, I don't want to have to explain the basics of everything with evidence to everyone. When do I have that responsibility? When I am making an argument I want them to accept

Pretty sure your question and closing wish fall into, asking for advice when already know the answer but don't like it. First, no responsibility and second you know wanting acceptance is often futile. Stick to espousing well thought out ideas and see where it leads bit by bit?

I'm not asking for advice. I'm trying to work out when I have a responsibility to explain personally and provide evidence for a truth claim I make. I used to think always but then I had way fewer people talking to me.

Apologies if my phrasing was clumsy. I was just suggesting you know that you don't have any responsibility for how others think and accept others think differently even when presented with same evidence but supporting your intelligent presentation of arguments & hope they sink in

I've been critical of feminists for refusing to give evidence of claims and then telling people to research them themselves.

I see, not easy but trying to embody perfection in a single or series of Tweets is challenging at best. Did someone suggest a single link to a collected body of evidence? See! Typical bloke not listening but wading in with advice 🙈

I’m struggling with this one. What’s an example of a situation where you’re discussing a thing without making an argument you want accepted? Where is the line? Using your earlier example, if you’re evolution-agnostic, why is it unreasonable to ask a biologist to explain?

It's not unreasonable at all. It would be unreasonable to call her a hypocrite if she recommended reading & declined to explain it to you.

When your explicit goal is for others to adapt your language & filter of external info , you ought to make a compelling case. When their stance is a rejection of well-documented research (e.g. evidence for climate chg or evolution) they can indeed educate themselves.

If I experience repeated occasions when a particular kind of information would be handy, I find it and then save it so I can just cut and paste it to anyone who asks about the same thing in the future.

It's reasonable to assume a single college course in the field to discuss with the layman. Everything else has to be explained. Then there is the generational issue. People my age have no idea there's an aquaporin channel for instance. It's still in the realm of magic.

I find myself endlessly litigating very basic notions in logic/philosophy, which any intro to philosophy takes as given, to make any banal example valid to them.

To piggy back on that, the reason why some could unscrupulously say "go educate yourself" to anyone who disagrees with them is their lack of interest in changing minds. They spout their opinions in public to promote themselves among those who already agree with them.

It's a strange appeal to their own authority. "I'm right, I won't demonstrate how I'm right, but you'll see I am if you bother to learn up on the topic."
