I'm not a Muslim and would not like to misrepresent them, however, as no one in your comments has covered this yet - at a recent talk given by a Muslim woman regarding women's rights in Islam said that the status of women in those societies, before Islam, was slave or chattel.

Yes, the alleged 'Time of Ignorance'. Islamic feminists have done well countering that, looking mostly at population stats and comparing the lives of Khadija & Aisha before & during the life of the prophet with what they were restricted to afterwards.
