The Inquisition was actualy formed in RESPONSE to a wide application of heresy charges to silence political opponents. Many of the time preferred to be tried by the Inquisition, b/c they were far more difficult to corrupt than a state court + thus more likely to find you innocent

Yes, and there were many deaths in europe where Inquisition, born in Spain and then imported by the other countries used it as a tool to kill opponents, and that didn't happen in Spain, which you mentioned before (iberian)
