Yes. Obesity, like mental illness or victimhood, should not be made an honoured identity. They should be things you hope to overcome but which doesn't define you as a person anyway.https://twitter.com/RoxanneSSukhan/status/983739502085550082 …

There’s an inability to grasp that yes, fat people are people, entitled to live life free from hatred and discrimination, and that yes, obesity is associated with poorer health outcomes. There are celebrities who make everything about their obesity, it’s unhealthy.

Losing fat, not necessarily weight, is difficult to do. Yet armchair activism such as "fat acceptance" lends itself to the path of least resistance. It is easier for an obese woman to call herself a "model" then it is to strive to become healthy. Fat men compensate with money.

As someone who is recently larger than is productive for a homosexual, I realise it is my responsibility for health (cruising aside) to take a charge of it. I would hate to be codified as prime victim meat being both gay and portly. I quite welcome the label Libertarian though.

Encouraging people to be better versions of themselves is a good thing. Even giving an honest effort to overcoming the challenges life throws at us can be an extremely rewarding experience.

Isn’t the whole ‘honored identity’ movement a response to meanness and discrimination? If so, can’t it’s goals be accomplished by emphasizing mutual respect and acceptance without delusional self identications?

To cast the body as unruly, wrong, bad is so damaging. Nursing, and also life, has taught me that the body is a most amazing ‘machine’ ... bodies aren’t wrong, and yet that’s the message we get. It’s almost like ppl don’t want to do the work. It’s
